The Animal Protection Party of Canada was the first political party in North America representing animals in politics, but around the world we are a part of a growing movement of animal parties that have had tremendous success in changing how society and politicians think and talk about animals.

World animal parties represent the need for a global shift in attitudes towards animals and the environment in our political systems. While each animal party is independent, we share a common goal of animal and environmental protection while standing for social justice. No other political ideology gives equal consideration to these three key areas of animals, people, and the environment.

The first party for the animals was started in Germany in 1993. However, so much of the success of animal parties in Europe and around the world stems from the Dutch Party for the Animals, Partij voor de Dieren. They were the first animal party to have an elected member in government and now have over 80 elected representatives at various levels of government including five members in their national parliament. Other countries with elected representatives from animal parties are Cyprus, Portugal, Germany, United Kingdom, and Australia.

One key aspect of the success of animal parties in many countries where they have members elected is that they are running for office under various forms of proportional representation. In Canada, we unfortunately still have a First-Past-the-Post electoral system which makes it extremely difficult for smaller parties to win seats and grow.
